Social Networking and Artificial Intelligence

Introduction:
In 2013, Facebook's global users burst through the billion mark, that's when CTO Mike Schroepfer embarked on a mission to transform the company into something more than just a social network. Today facebook is trying to beam internet to remote locations of the world using solar powered drones, build VR platform for social media ,education , gaming, health care.

Along with this facebook is trying to become a leader in the world of artificial intelligence (AI). To attain this AI supremacy, Facebook started Facebook Artificial Intelligence Research (FAIR) Lab. For FAIR, Mark Zuckerberg and Schroepfer hired some of the brightest minds in artificial intelligence in order to conduct research into areas like image recognition and natural language understanding. Research at FAIR happens under the leadership of YannLeCun, who is know as the father of Convolutional Neural Networks.

Also Mark Zuckerberg also expressed his desire to spend 2016 building AI butler(think of JARVIS from Iron Man) to help him run his life at home and work. This post got the world all excited garnering more than 420K like and 29K plus comments. This is a clear indication of how excited the world is about his resolution for this year. Though this announcement was in his personal capacity, but we know where this fair(FAIR) amount of confidence is coming from :P Since it's inception, FAIR has been churning out a lot of AI Systems , which have been integrated into Facebook.

Automatic Alternative Text :
Sharing photos on Facebook is a great way for users to communicate, but it is challenging for people that are blind or visually impaired to enjoy the experience of the News Feed. Billions of images are shared over facebookeveryday, but there are over 39 million people who are blind and over 246 million people who have a severe visual impairment. To help blind or visually impaired users understand what is happening on the News Feed, Facebook has launched a feature called Automatic Alternative Text.Automatic Alternative Text generates a description for the images appearing on the News Feed. Facebook users that have screen reader will hear the list of items contained in the photo.

This is thanks to the Object Recognition Technology that FAIR has developed. This Object Recognition Technology based on neural networks that has billions of parameters have been trained with millions of examples

Bots on Messenger
Facebook now allow businesses to deliver automated customer support, ecommerce guidance, content and interactive experiences through chatbots. These bots can send more than just text. They will be able to respond with structured messages that include images, links and call to action buttons. These could let users make a restaurant reservation, review an ecommerce order and more. For bot development, developers can use facebook's bot engine same as the one which powers M.

These bots have the capability replace 1800 numbers, offering more comfortable customer support experiences without the hassle of synchronous phone conversations, hold times and annoying phone trees.

Moments App
Facebook moments is a standalone app by facebook which allows you to sort photos as per occasions you took them on and who is present on them. It automatically shares these pictures with all the friends that have been identified in this pic.

How does this app do it, say hi to Deep Face. Deep Face is a Facial Recognition system being developed by Facebook that is as good as your eyes if not better . It can determine whether two pics feature the same person with up to 97% accuracy.

An exclusive inside look at how artificial intelligence and machine learning work at Apple:
“We use these techniques to do the things we have always wanted to do, better than we've been able to do,” says Schiller. “And on new things we haven't be able to do. It's a technique that will ultimately be a very Apple way of doing things as it evolves inside Apple and in the ways we make products.”

The AI research division at Facebook is open sourcing its image recognition software with the aim of advancing the tech so it can one day be applied to live video. Facebook's DeepMask, SharpMask, and MultiPathNet software is now available to everyone on GitHub.
That music is scary!' Watch AI ROBOTS react to horror movies:
In the reaction clip, Edi can be seen changing facial expressions on its front screen and even covers its ‘eyes’ during an intense scene of the trailer. ‘That music is scary’, it says in the beginning of the trailer. ‘That's scary, that is definitely scary.’ ‘If I had nails, I would have bitten them,’ it says after the showing had ended .

“To be human is to be 'a' human, a specific person with a life history and idiosyncrasy and point of view; artificial intelligence suggest that the line between intelligent machines and people blurs most when a puree is made of that identity.”
